Are You Sleeping in a Sanctuary?

by Faith Ranoli
Host of Heart & Home Thursdays, 1pm PT on http://www.healthylife.net

The one room in the house where we typically spend the most time is the bedroom. We sleep or rest on average seven hours a night, usually our pet sleeps just as long as we do in the bedroom with us. This time of rest is essential for the body to regenerate, and to renew itself.

Many studies have shown the importance of a healthy immune system and it's reliance on a good night's sleep. But what if your bedroom is emitting an energy field that has a toxic impact on your body's or your pet's body's energy field?

Will your body or our pet's, find that rest and regeneration it needs to keep you healthy? Most people do not think about the electrical or magnetic fields surrounding them, especially when sleeping.

Here are 8 things you can do to create a safer environment in which to sleep:

o Move your digital clock at least 6 feel from the bed.

o If crating a pet use a plastic crate and pay attention to the outlets that are near where you have placed the crate.

o Ensure your home's electrical system is grounded and in good working order.

o Move electrical appliances such as lamps, radios, TV's and cell phones away from the bed.

o Turn off all wireless devices, digital baby monitors, cordless phones, wireless headsets, and Bluetooth devices.

o Only use an electric blanket or waterbed heater to warm the bed then turn them off.

o Replace metal box springs with non-metal platforms.

o Install an electrical demand switch that turns off the electrical power to outlets around your bed.

HealthyLife.net Health News Super Segment

If you couldn't listen to last Tuesday's health super segment at 7am and 7pm PT (and all day on archives)here's some of what you missed...

Exposure to noise is a fact of life. At high levels, noise can damage hearing, and at lower levels it can disrupt sleep patterns, interfere with communications, and even cause accidents. A new National Academy of Engineering report characterizes the most commonly identified sources of noise, looks at efforts that have been made to reduce noise emissions, and suggests ways to decrease exposure in workplaces, schools, recreational environments, and residences. Development of noise control technology needs immediate attention, said the committee that wrote the report. America should become more competitive in the production of low-noise products, both to improve quality of life and to advance innovation. The committee recommends that the federal government explore potential engineering solutions along with changes in policy to control negative effects of noise in the workplace, in communities, and at home. These include cost-benefit analysis of noise reduction, especially for road traffic noise; improved metrics for noise control; lower limits for noise exposure in industry; “buy quiet” programs; wider use of international standards for noise emissions; airplane noise reduction technology; and noise control in public buildings. Improved cooperation between industry and government agencies, particularly the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is also called for.

An evergreen shrub, green tea has long been used worldwide as a popular beverage and a respected herbal remedy. The earliest record of green tea drinkers was around 2700 B.C. Studies suggest that green tea may help decrease some infectious diseases, tooth decay and may enhance immunity. Now findings from a recent study suggest that green tea may help aging. The results of the study found a 20 percent reduction in levels of DNA damage which may indicate that regular consumption of green tea aid in protection against damage at a genetic level and slow the aging process.

A higher rate of diabetes seen among adult Americans when compared to peers in England is explained primarily by a larger waist size rather than conventional risk factors such as obesity, according to a new study by researchers from the RAND Corporation, University College London and the Institute for Fiscal Studies in London. Americans carry more fat around their middle sections than the English, and that was the single factor that explained most of the higher rate of diabetes seen in the United States, especially among American women. Waist size may be the missing new risk factor. Analyzing studies about the health and lifestyles of large numbers people from the United States and England, researchers found no association between higher diabetes rates in the United States based upon conventional risk factors such as age, smoking, socio-economic status or body mass index, the commonly used ratio of height and weight that is used to measure obesity and over-weight. The higher waist size of Americans posed more risk compared to their English peers across most body mass index categories. For example, among women with normal weight, 41 percent of American women were categorized as having high waist risk compared to 9 percent of English women.

A recent study reported in the Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine sought to determine whether certain yoga postures could reduce anxiety levels and improve mood by increasing brain GABA levels. Although GABA levels have been found to be lower in people with anxiety and mood disorders, there have been no previous studies that increased GABA levels can improve anxiety and mood. Researchers found that GABA levels are lower in people suffering with anxiety and mood disorders. The study included thirty-four subjects with who were randomly placed in a yoga group or a 60 minute, 3 times a week walking program. The results revealed that the yoga group reported greater improvements in anxiety and mood when compared with the walking group. They also found that increased thalamic GABA levels ARE associated with improved mood and decreased anxiety, although further research is needed.

Humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes and each person has two copies of each gene. One is inherited from the mother and one from the father. These genes are how height, hair color, skin color, and eye color are determined, as well as, natural talents, mental abilities and susceptibility to acquire certain diseases. Now a study reported in Nature Genetics found that gene mutation may affect the risk of breast cancer. Researchers identified five gene mutations that were associated with breast cancer risk in women with BRCA 1 gene mutations. This study could be useful in determining individual breast cancer risk in women with this BRCA 1 gene mutation.

Orthorexia nervosa? Healthy Eating Disorder? Poppycock!

There’s a new eating disorder that was recently reported in London’s Guardian newspaper and originally came from a Colorado Doctor Steven Bratman, MD who coined the phrase...It’s called the "Healthy Eating Disorder" otherwise known as orthorexia nervosa.

The symptoms of this new, and in my opinion “fabricated”, mental disease as the article states is that, "Fixation with healthy eating can be a sign of a serious psychological disorder. Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soy, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out…” The newspaper further reports that, "The obsession about which foods are "good" and which are "bad" means orthorexics can end up malnourished."

So now according to ”the experts” wanting organic food instead of GMO and junk food means your crazy, there’s something wrong with you and you will get malnutrition. Poppycock! Okay, I get if you carry anything too far and don't use common sense that you could get sick but it sure makes ME wonder about what “behind the scenes” role of the pharmaceutical companies and the traditional medical communities might have had in making up this new disease or maybe the "good" doctor was looking for publicity. Could they all be scrambling to get profit dollars by trying to convince people that good food is dangerous and that GMO food and drugs are the safer alternative? After they diagnose you with orthorexia nervosa is the cure force feeding you drugs and junk food?

I mean really does this Healthy Eating Disorder make sense to you? It doesn’t to me...so put me down for that mental disorder...Yup I’m crazy!

However, it is interesting how most of the doctors I had 18 years ago, who were around my age at the time...are dead...and me, who by my eating habits-(NO wheat, dairy, refined sugar, preservatives, artificial colorings, GMO foods, fermentation, alcohol, only certain meats, fish, fruits and vegetables)...is apparently classified as orthorexic! Well...I haven’t been ill in over 18 years, nor needed a traditional doctor, nor have taken any prescription drugs in all that time. In fact I'm in top physical health.

So Poppycock to your story Guardian newspaper and to you too Steven Bratman, MD!

CLEANING FOR A REASON AND MORE

By Daena Smoller

I just learned this bit of information and I'm so excited to pass it on to you!

There is an organization in the United States called Cleaning for a Reason, and can be found at http://www.cleaningforareason.org. Here's what it's for and how it works: Any woman who is currently undergoing chemotherapy can sign up at the website and have her doctor fax a note confirming her treatment. Cleaning for a Reason then contracts a participating maid service in the patient's zip code and arranges for house cleaning service one time per month for four months during the cancer treatment time frame...and it's absolutely FREE.

There are 547 partner cleaning services across the country that work with Cleaning for a Reason in an effort to help those women undergoing chemotherapy. Please be sure to pass this information along to any woman who may need this service. And while you do so, please bookmark the Breast Cancer Site at http://www.thebreastcancersite.com and your daily click helps provide early breast cancer detection to women in need.

I wish these services were around when my mom was first diagnosed with breast cancer back in the late 1970s. However, during her second bout with cancer, she discovered the work of Dr. Bernie Siegel and if I remember correctly, she had the opportunity to converse with him. She even headed up a cancer support group as an offshoot of Dr. Siegel's work because that's the kind of woman that she was; one that supported all kinds of people regardless of what she may have been dealing with herself.

My mom said wonderful things about Dr. Siegel, probably because of a shared philosophy which is to take control and responsibility for your own healing. If you haven't discovered Dr. Bernie Siegel, you can do so the first Tuesday of every month on HealthyLife.net. Dr. Bernie Siegel's show, MIND HEALTH MATTERS, is part of HealthyLife.net's Visionary Series. And of course, check the HealthyLife.net for options on how to listen to all of Dr. Siegel's archived shows.

And while on the subject of health, you may also want to check out Jonathan Goldman's show, THE HEALING SOUNDS SHOW, which airs the second Wednesday of the month, part of the HealthyLife.net's Harmony Series. Jonathan Goldman focuses on the healing power of sounds which can help your life on multiple levels.

And of course that brings me to my very good friend, Linda Mackenzie who hosts THE LINDA MACKENZIE SHOW (formerly known as Creative Health & Spirit). Her show is a trip and I know first hand because I filled in as a board operator during the first couple of years after the launch of HealthyLife.net. She has interesting guests and focuses on fabulous health and awareness information and even provides some free energy readings. Linda Mackenzie loves to take calls from her audience so be sure to call in...you'll have a great time!

And coming up on January 4th, it's the launch of NEWS @ 7, exclusively on HealthyLife.net. It's the positive news served straight with no fear factors, anchored by broadcasting veterans. NEWS @ 7 will revolutionize news...something that hasn't been accomplished in 50 years! So mark your calendars and get ready for "7" on HealthyLife.net!

In the meantime, have a HEALTHY HOLIDAY SEASON!
