State of the Media: How America Listens to Radio

Radio, one of the 1st in original mass media, continues to play a big part in the lives of Americans everywhere-with 245 million Americans listening weekly of which194 million tune in through digital internet radio. That means more than 91% of Americans (age 12 or older) tune in each week.

In today's rapidly evolving world of consumer choice and technological advancement, audio becomes an even more integral part of our lives. Internet Radio is a trusted companion all throughout the day and not just in 'drive time' like traditional radio. Although traditional radio has taken away local radio in the U.S., internet radio networks like HealthyLife.net have integrated local based radio into their program schedules. This gives their local community a voice and a specified audience.

For advertisers, radio delivers a mass audience in real-time across markets large and  small that is highly qualified;  HealthyLife.net Radio also delivers the advertisers message after real-time delivery with on demand listening and podcast downloads. The vast majority of radio listeners are in the workforce and with Internet Radio they listen at work. More than three quarters of the national adult audience works full or part time during the week.

How Big Is Radio's Reach?

It's no secret, radio's reach is unprecedented. According to the recent All Access Q2 2015 Audio Today Report 245 million Americans aged 12 years old and older tuned to radio during an average week. However, while the bigger markets often grab the headlines, small and medium markets are still viable because you can reach them all at the same time on Internet Radio which goes beyond the traditional radio 50 -500 watt footprint to cover local, national and the world.

The report also noted that the majority of consumers in these markets are connecting to the radio and spending a lot of time listening as well. More than 86% of consumers tune in during the week and spend more than 15 hours of their media time with radio.

However, here's a tip... remember in advertising it is not how many people you reach, it's how many times you reach the same person - and with HealthyLife.net's 14 year loyal and growing audience, as a HealthyLife.net advertiser, you are always maximizing your reach. Radio: Listening to HealthyLife.Net is Part of What Everyone is Doing

by Debbi Dachinger

It's probably not news to you that traditional FM radio is dying out at an increasing rate. This trend has been taking place for the last two decades thanks to a string of events that have set us up for a brave new world of streaming Internet radio.

The demise of radio can be traced back to the 1990s. Before 1992, a company could not own more than two stations per market, and the Telecommunications Act of 1996 completely took the shackles off ownership. Clear Channel went on a buying spree, purchasing more than 70 other media companies, plus individual stations. It now owns 850 radio stations in the U.S.

This caused a switch from locally-driven programming to corporate-directed programming. In the old days, the program manager of the station decided what was played. A smart Program Manager knew their local area and played what the area liked or was open to hearing. Now, that's no longer allowed. Playlists come from corporate HQ and there is no deviation from it.

The result is listeners are switching off in a big way. This past April, the radio business got its first wakeup call: Internet Radio is now the largest radio station in Los Angeles. L.A., the city of so many aspiring artists, the city with more recording studios and music stores than upermarkets, the city with radio stations that gave us super DJs like Ryan Seacrest and the now deceased Casey Kasem.

But a survey by Media Audit estimated that 1.9 million people in Los Angeles listened to  Internet Radio between September and October of 2011 while Seacrest's station, KIIS-FM, had 1.4 million listeners during the same time period. Now in 2015 Internet Radio has grown even greater.

Internet Radio is doing a good job of getting into new cars. Many of the major car manufacturers offer Internet Radio as part of its in-dash system. These are usually sold as extras, and are available through your browser, on iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry. For living room use, HealthyLife.net and Pandora can be found in Samsung Internet@TV sets, Sony TVs and Blu-ray players, Roku, Sonos, TiVo and LG Blu-ray decks.

If you're tuning in to HealthyLife.net it's because our programming is original, globally available and has content that listeners desire to hear. Let us know how you like what we're doing and what you are enjoying about the station and our hosts. We are listening!

HealthyLife.net Radio 'ZAPS THE APP' with 'No App' Listening, Shows and Web Design

HealthyLife.net Radio Network (www.healthylife.net) is excited to announce that with a click of a button, on its newly designed website, 'NO APP' listening for smartphones, tablets, Wifi and other devices is available for its long-running/new radio shows.

Since 2002 HealthyLife.net Radio, a pioneer and leader in internet broadcasting, has been bending radio traditions in futuristic and innovative ways. Starting with providing 'only positive programs' and the positive news broadcast HRN News@7 to now streaming to almost all types of devices direct from its website without needing a downloadable APP. Unlike BBC 's streaming upgrade experience, HealthyLife.net's policy of 'no listener left behind' continues to provide listening for its existing Windows Media/Silverlight audience. For those who want an APP or the occasional device where listening cannot be accessed, audiences can listen via the free TuneIn App or website.

Internet radio's actual audience measurement is by streaming server statistics, not website statistics. HealthyLife.net has over 62 - 24/7 syndicated/simulcast distribution channels. Yet each channel looks like 1 listener to the streaming server, though the stream may be going to hundreds of thousands of listeners. Few distribution channels give their listener counts to HealthyLife.net. HealthyLife.net's new stream not only gleans more actual listener counts for its advertisers but, further expand its reach to even more distribution channels that allow the new format.

"We were due for a change. Hopefully the cleaner look of our website, along with the easier method to access our programs will please our listeners." states Linda Mackenzie Founder/GM of HealthyLife.net. "As for our advertisers the increase in valid multi-device audience statistics through 3rd party analysis should please them too."

As Spring 2015 brings forth new life, HealthyLife.net's brings a Spring line-up of new shows and segments like HRN News@7 Marijuana State Report with bond broker Barbara Southworth and the Arts & Entertainment Segment with Mike Hixon. Tune in to Jay Cruz's Backbeat Radio for music news and interviews,  Allen Knight's Knight Talk Live,  Marriage Works with Cathy Chambliss, the Miriam Knight Show and discover beauty secrets and trends on Patty Schmucker's American Made Beauty. All of HealthyLife.net's 168 weekly programs provide a fertile planting ground for advertisers placing ads this Spring.

Radio Guest Jitters?

by Linda Mackenzie

Are you nervous when you thinking about being interviewed on the radio? Well that is just normal. Even the top radio professionals in the industry may get some nervous jitters before being interviewed or going on air.  Most radio stations want sensationalism or controversy and may even set you up negatively to entice their audience, even if they don't believe what they are saying to you. So the only way to really prepare for an interview is to know your topic inside out, be honest, truthful and be prepared for the unexpected.

Most radio hosts are very busy, so when you approach them to get on air you may want to include 8 questions or 'Talking Points' about your topic. In most cases the  radio hosts will use some, or all of them, which puts you ahead in the interview game. However, NEVER read your answers on air. Listeners know when you are reading. A really good radio host will actually hit you with an off the wall question to force you back into conversation mode if they suspect you are reading.

It may help to rehearse these 'Talking Points' once or twice with a friend or family member before actually going on air. You can also have your friend or family member make up their own questions that you don’t know in advance about your area of expertise. The trick is to NOT to rehearse too much because you will sound like a canned response and people will lose interest, including a really good radio host. A good host will have you off the air in record time if your interview sounds canned.

Don't be afraid to make a mistake, listeners usually find this endearing instead of horrifying, because it makes you human. You can either quickly ignore and pass over the mistake, admit the mistake or make a joke about the mistake. To err is human and everyone makes mistakes - just try not to make mistakes about the integrity of the information you are presenting.

Remember a radio interview is just a conversation between two people, which happens to be going out to many. Focus on the conversation and just go with the flow. Remember the only way to really prepare for an interview is to know your topic inside out, be honest, truthful and be prepared for the unexpected.

Be A Great Guest On Radio

by Debbi Dachinger

Radio is a terrific venue. Being interviewed allows people to know you and what you do quickly. It also allows the listeners, including potential clients, to see you as an expert and gives the sense that your business (or your book) is “legit.” So being booked as a radio guest can be a positive and powerful promotional device for you and your business.

To be a guest on radio is great whether it's a popular internet radio program on a bona fide station or a traditional radio station because both get listened to on average 3-5 hours a day. According to past research from Edison-Arbitron podcasts are only listened to 1-3 minutes at the top of the hour. Although some podcasts may be a good venue to be interviewed on if you hit a very popular host with a large following.

How do you become a great radio guest? Here's some hints... The first and foremost thing is to be yourself. Then, if you want to be on radio, listen to radio. Tune in to the kinds of talk radio shows that you think would best showcase you (or your product) and would most likely feature you.

Pay attention to each guest interviewed on the radio show. Notice on various shows the guests you like  and dislike. Ask yourself: why do I enjoy listening to them? What kept me captivated? Why do they bore you or make you want to tune out? Take note because these are qualities you will want to use and avoid while on air, of course through the filter of who you are authentically. Never lose your unique voice.

Follow this blog each week to learn more hints on how to be a great guest on radio!

Reba Merrill: I Dare You To Live a Positive Life

by Debbi Dachinger, Dare To Dream Radio Host, Wed. 11am PT www.healthylife.net

I recently interviewed Reba Merrill from the Healing Sound Radio show on HealthyLife.net. We had a brilliant conversation - see how this influences you. I dare you to take Reba's dare!

Debbi: What is the greatest lesson you've learned?

Reba:    I learned to forgive myself and not let mistakes have any power. It took me a long time for me to find me.

Debbi: What is something you are deeply grateful for?

Reba:    At my age it's health which brings me happiness and that's all I want.

Debbi: What's the most important thing you do to keep your life positive?

Reba:  I exercise, I eat healthy [no sugar or white flour] and am grateful for my blessings.

Debbi: If you could DARE the listeners to do anything that will create positive change for them, what would you dare them to do today?

Reba: The most powerful thing someone can do is try something that scares them.

Tune in to Reba Merrill's Hollywood Show which airs Wednesdays 2pm PT on www.healthylife.net.

HealthyLife.Net Radio – Back In Time Capsule - 2003

HealthyLife.Net Radio Network 2002-2012
10 years of Positive Talk

Back into the Time Capsule: 2003

With 3 months of Network Beta testing completed, in January 2003 we started other radio hosts with eclectic topics not found on traditional radio stations. Some of our new hosts included Raw Food Maven Elysa Markowitz, noted Naturopathic Doctor Dr. Gloria Gilbere and Golden Globe Winner, Academy Award nominee Sally Kirkland – who are all still with us today.

Our many guests were great too. We had Jean Houston’s dog sing opera on air to Stephanie Miller’s comic antics gracing our air waves.

In its infancy stage our show topics included natural health, business, spirituality and the paranormal. Even though internet radio was still new and most people didn’t even know what it was we managed to glean 589,787 listeners for the year.

We added a chat room and live call-ins to our shows and by the end of the year we had to move our studio to a larger location. We added more equipment, more hosts wanted to come on air and we were getting more listeners. It was time to take the next step…

More next month when we go…Back into the Time Capsule: 2004

Are You Sleeping in a Sanctuary?

by Faith Ranoli
Host of Heart & Home Thursdays, 1pm PT on http://www.healthylife.net

The one room in the house where we typically spend the most time is the bedroom. We sleep or rest on average seven hours a night, usually our pet sleeps just as long as we do in the bedroom with us. This time of rest is essential for the body to regenerate, and to renew itself.

Many studies have shown the importance of a healthy immune system and it's reliance on a good night's sleep. But what if your bedroom is emitting an energy field that has a toxic impact on your body's or your pet's body's energy field?

Will your body or our pet's, find that rest and regeneration it needs to keep you healthy? Most people do not think about the electrical or magnetic fields surrounding them, especially when sleeping.

Here are 8 things you can do to create a safer environment in which to sleep:

o Move your digital clock at least 6 feel from the bed.

o If crating a pet use a plastic crate and pay attention to the outlets that are near where you have placed the crate.

o Ensure your home's electrical system is grounded and in good working order.

o Move electrical appliances such as lamps, radios, TV's and cell phones away from the bed.

o Turn off all wireless devices, digital baby monitors, cordless phones, wireless headsets, and Bluetooth devices.

o Only use an electric blanket or waterbed heater to warm the bed then turn them off.

o Replace metal box springs with non-metal platforms.

o Install an electrical demand switch that turns off the electrical power to outlets around your bed.

Labor of Love: HealthyLife.net News@7

As another summer comes to a close many wonder where did the time go? Time and how we spend it is becoming just as important as how we use our financial resources, or make other healthy decisions on a daily basis. Children are going back to school a little sooner, and weather patterns have been changing recently too. Now it can be a challenge to find our rhythms that we are used to that can get us back on track.

The HealthyLife.net News@7 has been a "Labor of Love" for all involved since its launch in January 2010. Information is important and these days it takes a little more time to find the better news that is usually overlooked or goes unreported.

Every day of the week on HealthyLife.net News@7 there is a new and different feature with Heroes and Happy Living, Health news, Science and Technology, Environmental news, as well as, Arts and Entertainment. Guest opinions and daily updates are provided on World news, National topics plus Business and Sports News. If you’ve listened to HealthyLife.Net News@7 broadcast, I'm sure you know most of the information for potential news content that is considered by mainstream news media are topics that we feel are too saturated and therefore we are a bit more selective with our listener in mind.

Besides the information and content out there, we seem to be using technology at an ever increasing pace. We are all working with the choices of how we like to communicate and receive our basic and sometimes recreational news. It's really at a point where if you haven't done so recently, you have to do a tech inventory just to keep up with the basics today. I personally like being in a world where I can use the "older", if you will, medium of radio with a new twist of being online. Online radio can not only be listened to on your PC from any where in the world, but on your mobile phones and devices, as well as being accessed in many of the new cars - sitting in the background for your multi-tasking life style or in the foreground to soak it all in.

With the Fall season on our doorsteps it can be another chance to make some positive shifts in your life if you feel the need. I'm working on some steps behind the scenes here at the Network to make the HealthyLife.net News@7 even better for loyal listeners like you. Keep an eye on this Blog for more info and updates specifically relating to the Healthylife.net News@7 and its featured stories and topics. Your feedback here or on any of our social media sites is always encouraged as well.

Happy Labor Day (Don't work too hard).

Chef Gordon Ramsey on HealthyLife.Net

FRIDAY, AUGUST 6 AT 7am & 7pm PT & ARCHIVED TUNE IN TO HEALTHYLIFE.NET News@7
http://www.healthylife.net/HRNnews7.html

You can count on Gayl Murphy to give you the headsup on what's happening with who in the Entertainment industry this week! Tune in to the A&E segment on HRN News@7 and you'll also hear an interview with Chef Gordon Ramsay - the Award winning British chef, restaurant owner and focus of the reality television show, "Hell's Kitchen"!

ABOUT GORDON RAMSAY
Gordon Ramsay has been awarded a total of 12 Michelin Stars and, in 2001, became one of only three chefs in the United Kingdom to hold three Michelin stars at one time. Ramsay was born in Johnstone, Scotland and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, England from the age of 5. Ramsay has described his early life as "hopelessly itinerant", as his family moved constantly due to the aspirations and failures of his father. In 1976, they finally settled in Stratford-upon-Avon where he grew up in the Bishopton area of town.

Ramsay played football and was first chosen to play under-14 football at age 12. He was chosen to play for Warwickshire. His football career was marked by a number of injuries, causing him to remark later in life, "Perhaps I was doomed when it came to football". In mid-1984, Ramsay had a trial with Rangers, the club he supported as a boy. He seriously injured his knee, smashing the cartilage during training. Ramsay continued to train and play on the injured knee, tearing a cruciate ligament during a squash game. He never fully recovered from the double injury.

By this time, Ramsay's interest in cooking had already begun, and rather than be known as "the football player with the gammy knee" at age 19, Ramsay paid more serious attention to his culinary education. In the late 1980s, he worked as a commis chef at the Wroxton House Hotel, then ran the kitchen and 60-seat dining room at the Wickham Arms. Ramsay then moved to London, where he worked in a series of restaurants until being inspired to work for the temperamental Marco Pierre White at Harveys.

After working at 'Harveys' Ramsay, tired of "the rages and the bullying and violence", decided that the way to further advance his career was to study French cuisine. In 2007, Ramsay opened his first Irish restaurant, Gordon Ramsay at Powerscourt, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Powerscourt, Co. Wicklow, Ireland.

In May 2008 Ramsay opened his first U.S. west coast restaurant, in Los Angeles, California. Situated in the former Bel-Age hotel on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, the hotel has been renovated and re-named The London West Hollywood. The restaurant is called Boxwood. Many episodes of Ramsay's U.S. series Hell's Kitchen are recorded in Southern California.

Internet Radio Listeners, Alexa and Web Site Stats

Internet Radio Listeners are quantified and compiled by the streaming server which is completely seperate from actual website statistics. The internet radio audience is said to be about 70-72 million per week.

Alexa does provides website statistics. However, the website stats are accumulated only from their community of sites who participate by installing and using their toolbar. According to Alexa, Alexa could not exist without the participation of the Alexa Toolbar community. Each member of the community who uses the toolbar contributes to the information about the web to the Alexa site, but the information gathered about any website is limited to what is gathered from their million or so tool bar users. This is the information used to provide a website's traffic rankings and related links on their site.

So although the Alexa website gives you a helpful snapshot of a website's statistics per Alexa's user community it does not and cannot count web radio listeners and is not a complete picture of a website's real traffic or positioning in the total web world.

I think Alexa is fun and I have been going their periodically for years. It does give me a snapshot of their user community and to us here at HealthyLife.net. everyone is important. But when looking at our statistics, our links and our actual demographics gleaned directly from our Clubhouse Alexa's information about the healthylife.net website is somewhat inaccurate for the real big picture of a website's positioning, website traffic and links.

Arbitron or Arbitrary?

Arbitron and Edison Research have released their “2010 Infinite Dial” Report. I repeat the question I asked them in 2004 at the RAIN Internet Radio Conference held at the NAB 2004 convention (when the Internet total suspected audience size was 32 million)…“How can Arbitron/Edison conduct a relevant study representing over 70 million internet listeners when they did a telephone survey of 1,753 people age 12 and older?”

I mean math was not my strongest subject in school, although I did become a pretty competent and respected data com engineer, and must admit I still shake when I think of my Probabilities & Statistics college class – but please correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t 1% of 70 million equal to 700,000?

Isn’t Arbitron-Edison’s sampling of 1,753 people interviewed in this survey just a little short of even 1% of the Internet’s 70 million total listeners? Years ago I was told that Arbitron’s numbers represented a 12:1 ratio (1 person interviewed = 12 people’s views). So if we even use this equation the number of 1,753 people becomes 21,036 people, which is still a little over 600,000+ short of a 1% sampling.

So although I personally hold Arbitron-Edison’s sampling base suspect, I do applaud them for trying to give us something! However most of the data in their report does not jive with HealthyLife.Net Radio Network’s data. The basis of our demographic breakdown comes from our clubhouse where people actually sign up and give pertinent information that is requested when they join.

Now Morgan Stanley just released an Internet Trends Report. Although not a survey, it is a commentary by various contributors AND Morgan Stanley does add a disclosure statement on their report which reads, “Morgan Stanley does not seek and do business with companies covered in Morgan Stanley research. As a result, Investors should be aware that the firm does have a conflict of interest that could affect the objectivity of Morgan Stanley Research. Investors should consider Morgan Stanley Research as only a single factor in making their investment decision.”

Seems to me that Arbitron/Edison should probably put some type of similar disclosure on their research study since much, if not all, their sources of funds comes from the radio industry who are their clients and thus they may perhaps have a vested interest that may or may not affect objectivity.

The whole point of this is that the radio industry is changing so fast. I wonder if Arbitron-Edison by doing things the same old way of using extrapolated numbers (and make no mistake PPM is still the same old way) are the people who base their decisions on this data truly being served correctly? I just want to go on record that I have my doubts.
